What is SSL?

The SSL(Secure Sockets Layer) security protocol provides data encryption, server authentication, message integrity, and optional client authentication for a TCP/IP connection. Because SSL is built into all major browsers and web servers, simply installing a digital certificate turns on their SSL capabilities.

SSL is used for securing the transfer of information between sites and browsers, with online banking and shopping cart transactions for example.

How do I monitor web usage statistics?

All our hosting customers receive the 'Webalizer' statistics package for free. The Webalizer tool displays constantly updated data, logging visitors, what they are looking at, when they are visiting, where they came from and much more. You must ensure that Webalizer has been turned on. Detailed instructions for activating Webalizer can be found here.

View your web statistics from your Control Panel to see what domains are accessing your web site, how many "hits" you are getting, how much data is being transferred and more.

What are error, agent, referrer and transfer logs?

An Error Log stores data about errors generated by the server (e.g. Page Not Found error) or by your CGI scripts.
This data is used to trouble shoot and fix script errors.

An Agent Log stores data about agents used to enter the site -- such as web browsers ( Internet Explorer, Nestcape ) or any other Internet-based software -- and all related data. This data is used in compiling the statistics for your website.

The Referer Log stores the list of URLs from which visitors are referred to your website. This data is used in compiling the statistics for your website.

The Transfer Log feature stores combined data about every visitor that comes to your website, including remote host IP (i.e. visitor's IP), time of request (i.e. when visitor requested the page), first line of request, etc. This data is used in compiling the statistics for your website.

To turn on these logs login to your Control Panel:

1. Select Web Options Icon in the Quick Access section of your Control Panel
2. Click the Off Icon next to the log to activate them.
How do I simulate sub-websites?

To simulate a sub-web site, you have to create a new directory (or folder to MAC users) and then upload the main loading page (index.html).

You can setup as many sub-web sites as you wish. Effectual.biz only charges additional fees if you go over the allotted disk and data transfer limits that are established in your pricing plan.

What should I do if denied access to my web site using a browser?
If you receive the message "There is no DNS entry for http://www.yourdomain.com.au", there are several possible explanations:

For a NEW domain, it may take a few days for the name to be released by INWW and propagated to DNS's (Domain Name Servers) throughout the Internet.

If it is an older domain that has previously been reachable, the name may be on hold with INWW.

If you are unable to reach your URL, try www.microsoft.com. If you cannot reach this URL, you may have connectivity problems.

Contact your local ISP for information on possible network outages.

2. Mail

What is a POP account or a mail box?
A POP Account, or Mail Box is an email account that can collect email.
When a person sends an email to a particular email address, the Mail Box is the place where the email is stored until you retrieve it. This Mail Box can be accessed by any person with a computer that has a Mail Client (example: Outlook Express, Eudora, Outlook 2000) and the proper username and passwords for this Mail Box.

All of the email within the Mail Boxes that you create in your Control Panel can be accessed via "Webmail" which is an online email client (similar to "hotmail") that will allow you to check your email from any computer that is online.

How do I setup a new email account in Outlook Express?
You can follow these simple steps to add a new email account to Outlook Express.
  1. After loading Outlook, choose Tools... --> Services ...
  2. Click add, and choose Internet E-Mail. Click OK.
  3. In the General tab of the email Properties dialog box, fill in your personal information.
  4. Click on the Servers tab, and fill in the server information. The Outgoing Mail (SMTP) should be your ISP. The incoming mail server should be your domain (mail.yourdomain.com). Put in your full email address in the account name field, and the password below. Click OK.
  5. Once you have done this you can click on the "Send/Recv" icon within Outlook Express and you should get your new messages.
What do my local email settings need to be in my mail client in order to get email from the server?
Your local email settings need to be as follows:

Incoming Mail Server: mail.yourdomain.com or mail.yourdomain.com.au
Outgoing Mail Server: mail.yourdomain.com or mail.yourdomain.com.au
Login: Your full email address that you are trying to POP.
Password: The same password that you assigned to that mailbox in your Control Panel's "Mail" section.

How do I pop in to pick up my virtual domain email?
Virtual domain users need to use the following format for thier user name when popping in:
	user%virtual_domain_name

Eudora might require the following syntax:
	user%virtual_domain_name@pophost

Microsoft clients may take the following syntax:
	user@virtual_domain

If you don't include the %virtual_domain_name, vpopmail will assume it is either a /etc/passwd user or a vpop user in ~vpopmail/users or configured with "default domain".
I can't send mail with Outlook Express. I get a rcpthosts error.
You need to check your POP3 box before sending mail trough the server. When the POP3 box is checked, you can send emails within the next 15-30 minutes.
What is an Email Forward?
An Email Forward is a local email address that will forward all the incoming mail to another email address.

Example: Bob@yourdomain.com will forward all email to anyname@hotmail.com. If anyone sends email to Bob@yourdomain.com the mail will be forwarded to the mailbox of anyname@hotmail.com.

What is an Email Alias?
An Email Alias is an alternative name for one mailbox.

Example: Bob@yourdomain.com is an alias for the mail box of Robert@yourdomain.com. If anyone sends email to either of these email addresses the mail will be collected by the mailbox of Robert@yourdomain.com.

Troubleshooting general Email problems.
Follow these simple steps to trouble shoot any email problems.
  1. Check the user name and password in the Mail section of your control panel.
  2. Change the Password, by clicking on the appropriate email account link in the Mail section and clicking the Change Password icon that appears next to it.
  3. If the above instructions have not helped then Delete the Email Account and Add the Email Account again.
(This will usually fix any and all problems that you may be having with an email account.)

3. Domain Name

What is a domain name?

Domain names are the familiar, easy to remember names for computers on the Internet (such as internic.net). They correspond to a series of numbers (called Internet Protocol numbers, IP address for short) that serve as routing addresses on the Internet.

Domain names are used generally as a convenient way of locating information and reaching others on the Internet. Domain names also reflects your particular business activity or trading name.

Do I need a domain name?

Web sites can be hosted without domain names (the so-called stop-gap domains). At the signup process a stop gap domain is automatically setup for everyone to access and manage their website using the stop gap(instant) domain alias you get at signup.

Stopgap domains support web site management and FTP services and have the same privileges as those web sies with domain names.

What is a stopgap domain?

A Stopgap domain allows you to use hosting services without a real domain name. What is created is a domain instant alias.

Stopgap domain:
- has IP address (shared or dedicated);
- can have Web service;
- can't have Mail services;
- can't have its DNS zone;
- can be accessed through FTP;
- can't have subdomains;
- can't have aliases.

If you register with a stopgap domain, you will get a domain name like "loginname.u1.effectual.biz". You can create your own web-site and access it with either the IP (if the IP is dedicated) or the above domain name.

A stop gap domain does not have any registration records in the DNS (Domain Name Server).

What does "register a domain name" mean?

The Internet domain name system (DNS) consists of a directory, organized hierarchically, of all the domain names and their corresponding computers registered to particular companies and persons using the Internet.

When you register a domain name, it will be associated with the computer on the Internet you designate during the period the registration is in effect.

How can I get a domain name in .com, .net , .org, .info, .biz?
Domain names can be registered by any organisation or individual anywhere in the world.
What is involved in registering a domain name in .com.au, .org.au or .net.au?

To be eligible for a com.au or net.au domain name, registrants must be:
a. an Australian registered company; or
b. trading under a registered business name in any Australian State or Territory; or
c. an Australian partnership or sole trader;
d. a foreign company licensed to trade in Australia; or
e. an owner of an Australian Registered Trade Mark; or
f. an applicant for an Australian Registered Trade Mark 1 ; or
g. an association incorporated in any Australian State or Territory; or
h. an Australian commercial statutory body.

To be eligible for a org.au or net.au domain name, registrants must be:
a. a charity operating in Australia, as defined in the registrant's constitution or other documents of incorporation; or
b. a non-profit organisation operating in Australia, as defined in the registrant's constitution or other documents of incorporation.

Will my name and contact information be publicly available?
Yes. Information about who is responsible for domain names is publicly available to allow rapid resolution of technical problems and to permit enforcement of consumer protection, trademark, and other laws. The registrar will make this information available to the public on a "Whois" site.
I have lost my Registry Key / Domain Name Password, how can I recover them?

How much does a domain name registration name cost?

Registration Fees
Renewable two year licence period / Australian dollars including gst
.com.au, or .net.au : $140.00
.org.au: $ 59.00
id,au: $ 99.00
.com, .net, .org, .info, or .biz
: $ 138.60

How long does it take to register or transfer a domain name?
It will take you just a few minutes to register a domain, but it might not be available on the Internet for up to 48 hours. This is due to the fact that Internet DNS databases are updated only once a day, causing the delay.
Someone else has registered my company's name as a .com domain name. What is the process for resolving my complaint?
All ICANN-accredited registrars follow a uniform dispute resolution policy. Under that policy, disputes over entitlement to a domain-name registration are ordinarily resolved by court litigation between the parties claiming rights to the registration. Once the court rules who is entitled to the registration, the registrar will implement that ruling. In disputes arising from registrations allegedly made abusively (such as "cybersquatting" and cyberpiracy"), the uniform policy provides an expedited administrative procedure to allow the dispute to be resolved without the cost and delays often encountered in court litigation. In these cases, you can invoke the administrative procedure by filing a complaint with one of the dispute-resolution service providers listed at http://www.icann.org/udrp/approved-providers.htm. For more details on the uniform dispute resolution policy, see http://www.icann.org/udrp/udrp.htm.
What are the rules for registration of .net and .org names?
They are the same as for .com. Traditionally, however, names in .net have been used by organisations involved in Internet infrastructure activities and .org is frequently used by not-for-profit organisations.
Are .com, .net, and .org domain names available for registration on a global basis?

Yes. The .com, .net, and .org domains are available for registration by Internet users across the globe. ICANN-accredited domain name registrars are also located in various countries around the world. To view the InterNIC list of domain name registrars by country, click here.

I've seen domain names ending with two-letter combinations, like .au. What are the rules for registering in these domains?

Two letter domains, such as .au, .de and .jp (for example), are called country code top level domains (ccTLDs) and correspond to a country, territory, or other geographic location. The rules and policies for registering domain names in the ccTLDs vary significantly and some are reserved for use by citizens of the corresponding country. You should check with the registrar offering ccTLD registration services regarding the specific terms and conditions for registration.

4. FTP

What is FTP?
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol.
FTP is the method used for sending files from your local computer to the web server where your domain is.
You can download a copy of a FREE ftp program here that will allow you to start transfering files.

If you would like to learn more about FTP and how it works please click here to view a full tutorial.

Anonymous FTP users don't see the content of my directory.

Anonymous FTP users can't enter your root directory. They can enter only the directory you dedicated for anonymous ftp users.

How come my virtual FTP users can browse my root directory?

Your virtual FTP users can have access to more than one virtual FTP directory, so you need to allow them to enter the root dir. You can use FTP subaccounts to restrict their access to only one directory.

When I'm trying to connect to my account using FTP, the system doesn't respond for some time and then logs out with an error.
Use FTP active mode (disable passive). It is in your computer's FTP configuration.

5. Troubleshooting

I am getting errors with FrontPage

Try switching it off and back on.

My Webalizer doesn't work. What's the problem?

One possible reason can be that you are approaching your disk quota. Webalizer needs at least 2 MB unused disk space to function properly. Also check the Webalizer info found at the online help desk.

The online file browser shows the zips as compressed files and offers to decompress them, but fails to do it.
WebShell can decompress only those files that are located inside the /usr/local/bin directory. If it's not there, just create a link.
I get "Failed to add new resource over the hard credit" message when I'm trying to create a new resource.
This means you have reached your Credit Limit. For example, you've used all your money on your balance if you pay by check, or your credit card expired/was broken and failed to be charged. In this case you'll still be able to run your hosting account (with recurrent and extra usage payment accrued), but you won't be able to create any new resource (neither paid nor free).
My SiteStudio doesn't work correctly.
Check with SiteStudio FAQ at the online help desk.
