Clue #6 - Take Control
Save money by learning how to take control of your
Internet Assets. With easy control interfaces to each of these assets,
you can easily do tasks yourself which would normally cost you money
to have other people do for you.
If you don’t have control, you are paying someone to do things
for you. These people-related costs could be the most expensive
aspect of the total cost of your Internet presence.
There are many aspects of your Internet presence
that you can and should control yourself. Here are our five favourite
steps:
- Empower your self to shop around for the best deal
on Internet access by having complete control of your domain,
email and web hosting services.
- Ensure that your hosting and email service partners
provide you with good control panels that you can easily use yourself.
This will enable you to quickly make changes to your Internet
environment without having to pay other people.
- Manage your own domains. It is easy, as all the main
registrars offer very friendly interfaces that give your complete
control.
- Engage web designers to design and build you a web
site, not to become your part time technician or content administrator.
These basic tasks are not value-adding from your design partner.
They are tedious for them and expensive for you. With control,
you can easily do these basic tasks yourself.
- Monitor your site usage, because when you know what
is working on your site, you can leave alone what is working and
only change what is not.
Whether you need to add an email address for
a new employee or to add some simple content to your website, you
can perform these simple tasks yourself from any computer connected
to the Internet.
In this brief recommendation, we have suggested that you should
gain control of as many of your Internet assets as you can. You
can save a great deal of money controlling your domain, email and
web hosting.
Start your control program with getting control
of your domain (see Clue #2). Then
take control of your Email and Web Hosting (see Clues #3
& #4). Only pay people to do
what you should never be doing yourself.
